Steve Mann • San Francisco's streetlights are required to provide surveillance functionality.

In the RFP (Request for Proposal), systems that do not provide surveillance (i.e. light fixtures that don't sense pedestrian and traffic flow volume, etc.) "will not be considered".  The new light fixtures use a camera in each fixture with computer vision to sense pedestrians, traffic flow volumes, etc., and adjust the light output accordingly.
